Eats & Explores: GWR Pullman Dining

GWR have just (June ‘24) released the Summer Menu for their GWR Pullman Dining service.

The Menu

What is it?

Never heard of GWR Pullman Dining? On selected services across their network, from Monday to Friday (except bank holidays), GWR have a dining cart offering a full dining service.

I (clearly 😅) love eating and exploring, and I’m partial to a train picnic… But a three course meal with wine, whilst whizzing across the country by rail? This was a definite first for me!

I wanted to do this with my Dad as part of his birthday celebrations thinking it would feel like a special treat, and it absolutely did!

The Birthday Boy 🥳

We had:

🖤 Asparagus, pea, and feta puff pastry tart
🖤 Pressed ham hock
🖤 Prime 6oz fillet steak (£15 supplement)
🖤 Panko breaded salmon
🖤 Sticky toffee pudding
🖤 Lemon meringue pie
🖤 T754 Shiraz Malbec

I do love a warm bread roll with proper butter so when we were surprised with just that before our starters arrived, I was chuffed. It was a really nice one too and perfect for piling my ham hock onto 😋

Cannot beat a warm bread roll!

Dad enjoyed his tart to start and was especially pleased with his steak, which the chef cooked (cliché I know) to perfection. I had the salmon and was impressed too, the balsamic mayo was so good I wanted more 🤩

Puddings went down very well too, and the after dinner chocolates were the perfect finishing touch!

Who doesn’t love an after dinner chocolate?

When & Where?

We were on the 17:48 Paddington to Swansea service and this was a fabulous way to end a London day out. Pullman dining is also available on the following services:

12.23 Swansea to Paddington

13.15 & 18:16 services from Plymouth to Paddington

13.03 & 19.04 services from Paddington to Plymouth

You can only prebook Pullman dining if you have a 1st class ticket, booking is available here. But if you happen to be on a Pullman service and there is space you can upgrade on the day, only paying the cost of the meal.

How much?

The cost when you take into account the experience and quality of food is reasonable, at £37 for a two course meal, £44 for three courses. Wine won’t break the bank either, there aren’t many restaurants these days where you can get a decent red for under £20 (ours was £19). Or if you fancy bubbles, Prosecco is £25 🥂

Our host for the journey, waving me off 🙂

I also have to give a mention to the staff on board – the service was brilliant, we had an absolute giggle with the team! Getting off at Parkway, I felt sure (without even asking) they’d make sure if Dad fell asleep he’d still get off at Neath!

My train leaving Bristol Parkway.

Thank you GWR for an excellent #GWRadventure. It really was the ultimate on board dining experience, my Dad and I had a journey we will never forget! The perfect way to end our day out in London, I’d definitely recommend as a gift if know someone with a birthday coming up (or Father’s Day is next week too!)

As always, if you made it this far, thanks for reading!
