The Royal Inn has had a refurb! It’s been so long since I’d been, I’d actually forgotten what the interior looked like… 🙈
📍 Pier Rd, Portishead, Bristol, BS20 7HG

I can report back it’s now really bright, spacious, and lovely and what I do remember – the fabulous garden – is still glorious, plenty of seating to admire the view and fairy lights for when the nights are drawing in ✨

The five of us went as a family celebration of our wedding anniversary, and we ate:
🥩 The Mixed Grill with Peppercorn Sauce

🐠 Hand Battered Atlantic Cod and Chips

🐄 Beef, Pancetta and Red Wine Lasagna

🧄 Garlic Ciabatta and Cheddar
🧅 Onion Rings
🍫 Triple Chocolate Brownie

🍨 Salted Caramel Sundae

🧄 Kids Garlic Bread Starter
👧 Kids Crispy Chicken Strips and Chips

👧 Kids Chicken Burger and Chips

👧 Kids Build Your Own Cheesecake Sundae

Our food was prompt and hot, as were the plates (hate cold plates!). The kids were particularly impressed with the garlic bread and chips, although we were all disappointed to miss out on the garlic sharing loaf from the specials, which they’d sadly run out of and looks absolutely epic 😭

Mr Eats.Explores steak was a little overdone on the mixed grill, but apparently the gammon was exceptional so a forgivable mistake and not worth sending back. This was good, solid pub food and we were all very satisfied – portions were generous, especially that kids sundae which I think everyone tried!!

Also important to know… They have a Picpoul on the menu 🙌 (followers of Natalie Brereton will be rejoicing with me I’m sure!!)

The Royal Inn is part of the Chef & Brewer Collection, which if you didn’t know is the ‘Country Pub’ offshoot of Greene King. Venues are designed to be quintessentially British, making you feel comfortable and cosy with traditional pub grub on offer. And the formula works! It also means that if you have a Bluelight card (available to those in the emergency services, NHS, social care sector and armed forces), you’ll get 20% off your food bill (for the entire table, max discount £40). Valid Mon to Sun minus specific holidays, check the app, you know how I love a bargain!

This is the sort of venue you can bring kids and grandparents to safe in the knowledge it will be easy for everyone to be comfortable and find something on the menu they’ll be happy with. If the weather is nice it would be fab to sit outside too. Would recommend!

And if you do head there with the family, there’s a cute little pebble beach at the bottom of the garden for skimming stones, collecting sea-glass and enjoying the views.
